世界的な現代美術家として活躍する草間彌生の、最新の創作活動を紹介します。半世紀以上にわたって水玉や網目の作品を作り続けてきた草間は、近年さらに驚異的な創作意欲を傾け、新たな絵画作品のシリーズを生み出しています。2004 年からの3 年間で制作された『愛はとこしえ』と、2009 年から現在もなお続く『わが永遠の魂』の連作です。『愛はとこしえ』は、無限に湧き出る連鎖的なイメージを、魔法のような筆使いで描き出した白黒のシリーズです。一方で『わが永遠の魂』は、自由奔放なイメージと鮮烈な色彩で無限の宇宙を感じさせる、これまでに見たこともない作品群となっています。

アーティストについて

草間彌生 （くさま・やよい）前衛芸術家、小説家。長野県生まれ。 幼少より水玉と網目を用いた幻想的な絵画を制作。1957年渡米、巨大な平面作品、ソフトスカルプチャー、鏡や電飾を使った環境彫刻を発表、1960年代後半にはボディ・ペインティング、ファッション・ショー、反戦運動など多数のハプニングを行う。独創的な作品と活動はアート界に衝撃を与え前衛芸術家としての地位を築く。1973年帰国後も全世界を飛び回り活躍中。小説、詩集なども多数発表。 1983年、小説「クリストファー男娼窟」で第10回野性時代新人文学賞受賞。 1993年第４５回ベニス・ビエンナーレに参加。 1998年から1999年にかけてロスアンゼルス・カウンティ・ミュージアムを皮切りに大回顧展がニューヨーク近代美術館、ウォーカーアートセンター、東京都現代美術館を巡回。 2000年、第50回芸術選奨文部大臣賞、外務大臣表彰。フランス、コンソルシウムで始まった個展は、パリ日本文化会館、オーデンセ美術館(デンマーク)、レザバトア美術館(トゥールーズ)、クンストハーレーウイーン、アートソンジュ・センター（ソウル）、アートソンジュ・ミュージアム（慶州）を巡回。 2001年、朝日賞。 2003年フランス芸術文化勲章オフィシェ、長野県知事表彰（学術芸術文化功労）。 2004年、森美術館個展「クサマトリックス」（森美術館）は52万人を動員。信毎賞。 2006年、ライフタイム・アチーブメント賞（芸術部門）、第18回高松宮殿下記念世界文化賞絵画部門受賞, 旭日小綬賞。 2009年、文化功労者顕彰。 2011年から2012年にかけて、国立ソフィア王妃芸術センター（マドリッド）から欧米回顧展がポンピドゥー・センター（パリ）、テート・モダン（ロンドン）、ホイットニー美術館（ニューヨーク）へ巡回。 2012年アメリカン・アカデミー・オブ・アーツ＆レターズ会員。ルイ・ヴィトンとのコラボレーション「LOUIS VUITTON × YAYOI KUSAMA Collection」を発表。 YAYOI KUSAMA Born in Nagano Prefecture. Avant-garde artist, novelist. Started to paint using polka dots and nets as motifs at around age ten ,and created fantastic paintings in watercolors, pastels and oils. Went to the United States in 1957. Showed large paintings, soft sculptures, and environmental sculptures using mirrors and electric lights. In the latter 1960s, taged many happenings such as body painting festivals, fashion shows and anti-war demonstrations. Returned to Japan in 1973. While continuing to produce and show art works, Kusama issued a number of novels and anthologies. 1983, the novel “The Hustlers Grotto of Christopher Street” won the Tenth Literary Award for New Writers from the monthly magazine Yasei Jidai. 1993, participated in the 45th Venice Biennale. From1998 to 1999, a major retrospective of Kusama’s works which opened at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art traveled to the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Walker Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. 2000, Kusama won The Education Minister’s Art Encouragement Prize and Foreign-Minister’s Commendations.　 2001, Received the Asahi Prize. 2003, the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Officier), and the Nagano Governor Prize (for the contribution in encouragement of art and culture). 2004, Her solo exhibition “KUSAMATRIX” started at Mori Museum in Tokyo. This exhibition drew visitors totaling 520,000 people. Received the 2006 National Lifetime Achievement Awards, the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Losette and The Praemium Imperiale -Painting- in 2006. 2009, Honored as Person of Cultural Merits in Japan. From2011 to 2012, Europe and North America retrospective tour started at Museo Nacional Centro De Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid traveling to Centre Pompidou, Paris, TATE MODERN. London and Whitney Museum, New York. 2012 The American Academy Of Arts and Letters Foreign Honorary Membership. Collaborated with Louis Vuitton creative director Marc Jacobs on collaborative collection “LOUIS VUITTON × YAYOI KUSAMA Collection”.
